Arndale Centre

The Arndale first opened in 1972, although it's been refurbished internally the layout remains the same.

Market Street entrance to the Morecambe Arndale Shopping Centre.

Before the Arndale the area was covered by lost roads such as Cheapside, Sun Street, Anderton Street.

Another casualty being the Royalty Theatre which sat next to what is now Barclays Bank on Market Street. The centre's access road now covers the site.

It was in a house on Cheapside, next to the Royalty Theatre, the late actress Dame Thora Hird was born.

Morecambe Library

This is probably one of the most useful places in Morecambe Town Centre. It consists of an entrance hall, sometimes you can find old books for sale, the main library, function room, offices, a children's library and the reference library.

The picture above shows the main entrance. The Arndale is behind the photographer.
The library opened in 1962 on a site which was previously occupied by the Gas Works.
Morecambe reference library.

The towns previous library was located in a shop on Victoria Street. This opened in the 1920s but was much smaller than the present building. The old library is now occupied by Farrell and Heyworth Estate Agents.

It's an interesting design considering when it was constructed. It's made up of three hexagonal wings with one on two levels.

The picture above shows the reference library, on the first floor, and offices below.

I've always found the reference library very warm and bright. The whole building seems to be able to attract as much light as possible.
