We bought
this carnivore at the 2006 Southport Flower Show.
The Victorians used this plant to control Whitefly.
At Growing Matters we're using it for the same purpose.
You can find it in the main greenhouse. We only
had one specimen when these photos were taken. We hope they
will aid us by using natural ways of dealing with pests.
It is an unusual plant,
it needs a very different compost than ordinary plants.
Below: Also it must be given rainwater rather that the usual tap
water.
Repotting
& Splitting
On the 12/04/2007 after flowering
for sometime and producing a few rosettes it was decided to attempt
to split the Pinguicula. As you can see from the pictures
we managed to split it into three plants. There were actually four
rosettes but the last two were so close together that splitting
them might have actually caused some damage. As it turned
out it was quite successful as three plants and is still flowering
as good as ever.
For the compost we used a mix of equal
parts of compost and moss to which a handful of sharp sand was also
added.
The moss we used was from the tarmac
outside. This was dried and chopped up.
After potting each plant was again
stood in about 1 cm of rain water. This of course will have
to be topped up on a regular basis during the Summer months.
