Could be
farewell to the Elms
First the Grosvenor was demolished and replaced with
luxury apartments. Recently it was reported that the Broadway
has been given permission to be demolished and replaced by about
50 apartments. Now it seems one of Morecambe's most prestige
hotels is to go the same way. That is, the Elms Hotel.
A recent planning application has been given to demolish
the building and replace it with 48 assisted living apartments.
So, at a time when Morecambe desperately needs large
good quality hotels, the big ones we have are being torn down to
make way for living accommodation. Is this really what Morecambe
wants right now? Surely if the Midland Hotel can be made viable
again, why can't the others?

Morecambe Gets Some Serious
Retail Therapy!
Two new large retail stores have opened
in the town on part of the former Frontierland site. The Clothing
store Next,
opened it's doors to the public on the 6th of March. The new
store sells Ladieswear, Menswear, Childrenswear and Homeware.
Next
is one of the first big name stores to come to the town in a long
time. It seems things are really changing for the north west
coastal resort what with the Midland Hotel due to open later this
year and the proposed mixed use development on the former bubbles
site. For Morecambe, the future looks good!
The DIY store Homebase
have also opened a large store on the former Frontierland site.
The new shop is spread over two levels and includes a small garden
centre down one side. This development is part of the first
phase of the development of the former Frontierland site.
It will include three large retail units when complete.
The last, JJB,
is to include a JJB
Fitness Club with an indoor pool as well as a large
retail area above; this is expected to open later in the year.

Green Light For Bypass
It has been announced that Heysham
M6 Link Road has finally been given the
go-ahead. After a lengthily public inquiry last summer the
secretary of state announced that the road would be allowed to be
built. The route follows the line of the Northern Bypass which
was originally proposed as far back as the 1960s. It will
be a wide duel carriageway running from Morecambe Road, past Lancaster
& Morecambe College and continue across open countryside until
reaching the M6. It will terminate at a remodeled Junction
34. Construction is expected to begin in 2010 and should take
two years to complete.

New Retail Park For Morecambe
Town Centre

As seen above the new units 'Next' on the extreme
left, and 'Homebase' are progressing well. It is expected
that Homebase should be open later this year with Next and JJB following
in 2008.
End Of The Road For The Broadway?
The Iconic Broadway Hotel in Morecambe
could be demolished to make way for luxury apartments.
A recent planning application applies
to demolish the large 1930s Hotel and replace it with a new building
containing 50 apartments. The building will be of varying
height going up to eight stories at its highest point. It
will contain a mix of one, two and three bed apartments.
Winter 2007

delayed
It has been announced that the opening date for the
Midland Hotel has now been delayed until 2008. It was previously
announced as to be reopening in Autumn 2007 but this has now been
put back to a later date.
